Vinicunca: hiking through the high Andes

Take a Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco and see the mineral bands of Vinicunca, one of the Peruvian Andes’ most recognizable landscapes. The trip departs before dawn, includes breakfast on the route and continues by vehicle to the trailhead.

This high-altitude ascent requires proper acclimatization. Along the way, you may see local communities, alpacas and views toward the Ausangate massif before reaching the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint.

Start: Cusco pickup between 4:00 and 4:30 am

Vinicunca rises above 5,000 meters. Spend at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco and do not make this your first activity after arriving from sea level.

Health: not recommended for travelers with uncontrolled heart or respiratory conditions.

Admission: the local Vinicunca ticket is not included unless expressly stated.

Horses: an independent local service, subject to availability and usually not covering the entire route.

Weather: snow, rain, fog or wind can hide the colors and change the itinerary.

Can I rent a horse?

Local residents often offer horses, but availability is not guaranteed, payment is separate and they may not reach the final viewpoint.

What if I develop altitude symptoms?

Tell your guide immediately. Stop ascending and descend when instructed; your safety is more important than reaching the viewpoint.

Pésimo servicio. Contratamos un bus con ellos, nunca vinieron a buscarnos al hotel. No nos contestaron a ninguna llamada ni mensaje y por supuesto no nos devolvieron el dinero. Desaconsejo fuertemente esta agencia.

¡La excursión a la Montaña Arcoíris superó todas nuestras expectativas! Todo el viaje estuvo muy bien organizado, con transporte cómodo, un delicioso desayuno y almuerzo, y un guía amable y profesional que hizo que la experiencia fuera placentera de principio a fin. Las vistas durante la caminata fueron increíbles, y llegar a la cima para ver la Montaña Arcoíris valió totalmente la pena. Nuestro guía nos dio tiempo suficiente para disfrutar del paisaje, tomar fotos y aprender sobre la cultura local y los Andes circundantes. Recomiendo ampliamente esta excursión a cualquiera que visite Cusco. Todo estuvo perfectamente organizado y fue, sin duda, uno de los mejores momentos de nuestro viaje a Perú. ¡Gracias por esta aventura inolvidable!
